Day 1; Tuesday, Jan. 8

This morning we all woke up very early in order to be at the airport by 4:00 am. Although we were incredibly tired, we managed to print our boarding passes and check our bags trying to keep the weight under 50 lbs. Next we went through security and stopped for a quick airport breakfast at McDonalds and Starbucks, before walking over to our gate. Due to the lack of sleep the previous night, the first flight to Miami consisted mostly of sleeping. While transferring flights in Miami we took the sky train, which everyone was excited about. Finally after a long morning, we were on our way to Costa Rica. The flight was about 2 hours and 30 minutes and now most of the group was awake. We were reading books, watching movies, and talking excitedly about Costa Rica. We looked from the airplane window at the hilly Costa Rican area. We had made it! Now all that was left was immigration and customs. After waiting in the long line that went by fairly quickly, we received another stamp for our passports, Costa Rica! After immigration, we walked to the baggage claim to retrieve our luggage, and went through customs. We walked outside to our bus and we went on our way to Heredia. When we first arrived to La Universidad Latina, we ate lunch at the cafeteria, the first Costa Rican meal of many. Next we took a tour of the university with our guide from LPI Señora Rodríguez. At the end of our tour we went to “una aula”, a classroom for orientation. We talked about our schedule and the currency of Costa Rica, colones, named after Christopher Columbus, as well as the seven provinces that make up Costa Rica. We also learned that the most important things are communication, safety, respect, and punctuality. After orientation, the bus dropped off every student to his or her family’s home. Everyone was extremely nervous to meet their families, but it was fine once we met them. Now everyone is settling into their homes, learning names, and speaking Spanish! Overall it was a tiring and eventful day, but exciting.
¡Pura vida! (Pure life, the “motto” of Costa Rica.)
