Today
we went on a tour of Heredia and a bit of San José. We went to the plaza in
Heredia first, where Priscilla showed us the beautiful church and park. The
church was more than 200 years old, and it was decorated very ornately inside
for Christmas; it even had a life-sized Nativity scene. Outside the church, Priscilla
gave us a talk about some of the history of Costa Rica: unlike many of the
surrounding Latin-American countries, it had very few precious metals, so the
Spanish left it relatively untouched. We
then moved on to the capital, San José, which is only a very short drive away.
In San José, we first went to the children's museum, where we learned a lot
about the geography and wildlife of Costa Rica. We also learned a bit about the
different regions of Costa Rica, and how they came to be so different from each
another. After the museum, we went to the market, where we saw a lot of very...
interesting meats. Apparently, a cow's stomach has a weird hexagonal pattern on
the outside of it that kind of makes it look like a honeycomb. After this
experience, we drove back to Heredia and went to the mall for a bit before
finally returning to our houses after a long day of touring. Everyone seems to be
getting used to their families already.
Our classes begin tomorrow!
